Haikyu!! (ハイキュー!!, from the kanji 排球 "volleyball") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Haruichi Furudate. The story follows Shōyō Hinata, a boy determined to become a great volleyball player despite his small stature. It was serialized in Shueisha Weekly Shōnen Jump from February 2012 to July 2020, with its chapters collected in forty-five tankōbon volumes.

An anime television series adaptation by Production I.G aired from April 2014 to September 2014, with 25 episodes. A second season aired from October 2015 to March 2016, with 25 episodes. A third season aired from October 2016 to December 2016, with 10 episodes. A fourth season was announced during the Jump Festa '19 and was planned for release in two cours, the first cour of 13 episodes aired from January to April 2020, and the second cour of 12 episodes aired from October to December 2020.

In North America, the manga has been licensed by Viz Media, while the anime series has been licensed for digital and home release by Sentai Filmworks.

Both the manga and anime have been met with positive response. The manga won the 61st Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen manga in 2017. As of November 2020, Haikyu!! had over 50 million copies in circulation.


Haruichi Furudate

Haruichi Furudate (Japanese: 古舘春一 Furudate Haruichi) is a 38-year-old manga artist best known for the series Haikyū!!. Haruichi Furudate was born on March 7, 1983, in the Iwate Prefecture, Japan and is currently employed by Shueisha Inc. He is best known for his sports manga Haikyu!!

Furudate's gender identity has never been confirmed, but the official Viz translation uses he/him. Furudate is from a small town Karumai, Iwate Prefecture. After graduating from high school, he moved to Miyagi Prefecture and enrolled in Sendai Design College. A well-known institution in Japan that is renowned for its manga, animation, and graphic design programs.

After graduating from college, at age 25, he submitted his series 'King Kid' to the Weekly Shōnen Jump Editorial Department (Shueisha), which later received an accolade at the 2008 'JUMP Treasure Newcomer Award.' In 2009, Furudate made his debut with his work 'Playground,' which received publication in the Akamaru Jump Magazine (now known as Jump Next!). Also, in 2009, in the 28th issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump, Furudate published his One-Shot series "Sophistry School, Yotsuya Sensei's Ghost Story." Later, in 2010, it received serialization in the 31st issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump. The series lasted for about four volumes. After that Furudate, set his sights on his long-time goal of serializing a manga on his favorite sport, volleyball. In 2011, he submitted One-Shot of Haikyu!! in the 21st issue of 'Shonen Jump NEXT!' and in 2012, received serialization in the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. A total of 45 volumes have been published, and as of 2020, Haikyu!! has sold over 50 million copies in circulation.

In 2012, Furudate did a short crossover collaborative comedy series with fellow manga artist Naoshi Komi (Nisekoi) called Nisekyu!!

Nekoma High School

  Metropolitan Nekoma High  ( Japanese :  都立 とりつ 音駒 ねこま 高校 こうこう   Toritsu Nekoma Kōkō ) , or Nekoma High for short, is a high school in  Nerima Ward  of  Tokyo  in Japan. Due to the players' flexibility and solid receives and digs, the Boys' Volleyball Club team is nicknamed "The Cats," which is also an allusion to the school name. Nekoma and  Karasuno  are said to be "destined rivals" because of the longtime competition between their respective coaches,  Nekomata  and  Ukai . Since the two teams' animal representatives (cats for Nekoma and crows for Karasuno) are animals that are usually found at the dumpster, the matches between the two teams are often called "Battle at the Garbage Dump" or "Trashcan Showdown" in the anime english dubbing. Fukurōdani Academy

  Fukurōdani Academy  ( Japanese :  梟谷 ふくろうだに 学園 がくえん   Fukurōdani Gakuen )  is a high school in Tokyo.  The Boys' Volleyball Team is currently a top four team in Tokyo and the ace of the team,   Bokuto , is one of the top five aces in the nation, just barely missing the top three. Additionally, the volleyball team has gone to Nationals each of the last three years, coinciding with the ace's attending years. At the Spring High Nationals (2013), they finished as runners up and lost to   Ichibayashi High . Fukurodani's most notable players are Bokuto, the captain and one of the Top 5 Aces in the nation, and  Akaashi , the team's setter and vice-captain. Fukurōdani's team is also a member of the Fukurōdani Academy Group, which is composed of teams from the Kanto Region.
